Five of the cars to look out for in 2008

ImageIt's time to look at what the year ahead holds for car buyers. You're bored of your presents and you're not feeling great after too much food and booze. Your bank balance isn't looking too healthy either. So it's a time for dreaming, and 2008 has some pretty exciting cars to look forward to. Why not pick one from our Five of the Best cars arriving in 2008? There's one to suit every budget. They are:

  1. Fiat 500
  2. BMW X6
  3. Jaguar XF
  4. Ford Fiesta 2008
  5. Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X

Introducing Fiat 500
ImageUnlike most of the cars on this five of the best list the Fiat is affordable to all. With prices starting at just £7,900 the impossibly cool supermini can be on your drive for a fraction of the cost of the other cars here. One problem though: the European Car of the Year 2008 is in such high demand that you'll have a job getting your hands on one - meaning you may have to actually pay over list price if you want to get in one early.

You might want to wait though, as the 500 comes with the potential to be had in over 500,000 different specifications, so if you want to spec yours exactly how you want it you'd be better to opt for a new one.

Introducing BMW X6

Image BMW has created its genre-busting X6 'Sports Activity Coupe' exactly when anti-SUV feeling is at a high point. It's highly unlikely that the sleek four-seater is going to slip under the radar of the green-lobby, but at least BMW has fitted all variants with its clever emissions and consumption improving EfficientDynamics technology.

Clever as that is it can only offset slightly the consumption from the twin-turbo petrol engines that are offered in straight-six and V8 guises. They both present quite sensational pace, the twin-turbo V8 managing the 0-62mph sprint in a scarcely believable 5.4 seconds, but then its combined consumption figure of 22.6mpg underlines why.

Introducing Jaguar XF

ImageIt's been rolled out at numerous motor shows around the world now, and it's been driven by a select few, but 2008 is when the XF has to go out and prove itself to the customers. There's more buzz about this car than any previous Jaguar, as really it has to succeed to help secure the company's future.

It faces some pretty stern opposition, the XF having to win customers who've been seduced by the German opposition. Jaguar hopes that the XF's bold new look will be enough to continue to appeal to exiting customers while also attracting new blood through the showroom doors.

Introducing Ford Fiesta 2008
Image After a Jaguar and a BMW in this list you might find it difficult to get excited about a humble Fiesta. But you should, as Ford's new supermini promises to be one of the most exciting cars to arrive in '08.

There's never been anything wrong with the way the Fiesta drives, but it's never looked particularly exciting compared to its more svelte rivals. Ford has taken this to heart and is promising far more exciting styling on the new car, its looks strongly hinted at by the Verve concepts that have been doing the rounds at the international motor shows lately. The proper production car promises to follow the concept's bolder style, while the interior too promises to feel more upmarket than the current Fiesta. It'll also be more spacious, judging by the larger dimensions exhibited by the concept.

Introducing Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X
ImageIf like us you're rather bored of seeing Mitsubishi roll out endless concepts of the new Evo X then you'll soon be placated. The new production car is officially unveiled in the UK at the Autosport show in January, and customers will be getting their hands on the car shortly afterwards.

The standard Evo X promises to be an absolute blast, with 290bhp from its new aluminium-block 2.0-litre turbocharged engine. As ever, power upgrades are being offered. These will initially be in 330 and 360bhp guises, though they're limited to the manual gearbox equipped cars, the six-speed twin-clutch paddle-shift cars only offered with the standard output.

ImageWHICH CAR IS  RIGHT FOR ME?

Before deciding on a particular model, it may help to consider your budget and requirements. What can you really afford to run? Have you factored in extra costs such as insurance, servicing and road worthiness?

NEW OR USED?

The benefits of owning a new car are obvious, and tantalising deals such as interest-free finance and the reassurance of a full manufacturer’s warranty may sway customers towards buying brand new. However, with the depreciation rate of new cars higher within their first few months, peace of mind can be affected by seeing its value drop.  Buying used means you save money not only on the sale price, you also lose less through slowing  depreciation, and you could always go for a higher spec with the money you save.

WHERE TO  BUY?
From classified ads in Auto Magazines to acres of vehicles on a car supermarket forecourt; the buyer has never been offered so much choice. So what are the benefits of buying privately, compared to buying from a mainstream dealer or car supermarket?

A DEALERSHIP:  Dealers are bound by regulations, to protect your rights as a consumer and ensure their vehicles meet certain standards. They’ll have a regular turnover of stock which you can browse and test drive. Franchised dealers are appointed by manufacturers to sell their stock so you should expect high quality stock and after sales service.  Be prepared to pay extra for the convenience though.

Independent dealers can differ greatly, but most provide a wide range of makes and models with some throwing in part-exchange deals and sound aftercare for less than the franchises. You may be unlucky enough to stumble across a less reputable trader trying to shift poor quality stock , so for extra reassurance check that your dealer is  a member of a  trade  Association.

SUPERMARKET: These are a good way of buying your next motor for less, and if you want a popular make or model expect to have plenty to choose from. Unlike dealerships, discounts are unusual in supermarkets and you are unlikely to succeed in getting a better deal through haggling. Simililarly, most supermarkets offer a lower grade of after-sales support, so it’s a good idea to be extra though when checking cars over.
